Brief summary

The JMP and the UN-Water Global Analysis and Assessment of Sanitation and Drinking-Water (GLAAS: http://glaas.who.int/) are responsible for monitoring of drinking water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) including for SDG targets 6.1 and 6.2 (JMP) and 6.a and 6.b (GLAAS). Together, the JMP and GLAAS teams have launched a two-year project to identify indicators for monitoring ‘climate resilient water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH)’ at the global level, to support progressive integration of information on climate resilience into national and global frameworks for monitoring WASH.

This document is a companion to the Excel file containing a list of candidate indicators (version 3.1) for monitoring climate-resilient WASH services. The indicators have been identified through a review of frameworks used in WASH and adjacent sectors to conceptualize climate resilience, and through a parallel review of literature on drinking water, sanitation, hygiene and climate resilience. Building on the 2.0 version, a consolidated and refined set (version 3.1) has been developed. These candidate indicators  will be reviewed and form the basis for development of a short list of indicators that could be used by the JMP and GLAAS teams for global monitoring.

This report is given the version number 3.2 as it corrected some minor errors present in a 3.1 version which was circulated informally. All indicators and numbering are consistent with the 3.1 set of candidate indicators.
